Mid-Week Music: Gabriels - "Love and Hate in a Different Time"

https://gabriels.bandcamp.com/track/love-and-hate-in-a-different-time

This is a song that on paper does not check all the boxes for me: it’s in a retro style, they lyrics are rather biblical, and I first heard it as a house remix.

HOWEVER…

That voice. Jacob Lusk’s gospel-trained falsetto is enough to pull me into anything. As a group, they pull off the style, and the lyrics are fantastic. The house remix is excellent.

Last few years that I have seen
Walking dead all around me
Silent fears, neatly folded dreams
Catacombs, Black Sea surrounding
Catacombs, Black Sea surrounding

It’s difficult to have lived these last two years and hear those words and not feel that they ring true. Further in, we hear

We lost it in the fire
Love and hate in a different time
We lost it in the fire
What I did to make you mine
What I did to make you mine

Even in the valley
Children smile through the misery
Diamond tears hide the casualties
Grace and mercy, do you follow me?
Grace and mercy, can you hear me?

Is it about the pandemic? Is it about love gone stale? Is it about our struggles with addiction?

Maybe it’s about all these things or whatever we need it to be right now. It’s beautiful and terrifying and comforting to me, all at once.

Bonus: that house remix
