Mid-Week Music: Yazmin Lacey - Own Your Own

(chill YouTube version)

(chill original recording with beat)

(both are amazing - listen to both!)

Some lyrics...

Don't let the grind get you down
Even though that shit will try us

The pain learned is lessons gained
And knowledge is our power
The rare and the real remain
And we're stronger than we feel today

Yes, my friends, we are stronger than we feel today. I feel this so hard. I don't always feel strong. Things happen that threaten to break me down. But my strength comes from my experiences and my community, and those will always be with me. When I stagger, they hold me up.

I love finding new music that touches me like this. I found a few in the last week.

I don't know anything about Yazmin Lacey, and I'm not going to quote from the internet for you (I haven't even Googled her yet), but her voice has just the slightest breathiness on the high notes, an opening for a sincere declaration of love and concern.

The see-saw between keys and her lilt feels like sitting in a rocking chair in a beam of sunlight. It's cozy, but this is real talk, not fluffy nonsense for zoning out.

I swear I haven't even heard anything else by her yet, but I'm about to.

I love you, David
